The album debuted at #1 selling 178,000 copies in it’s first week after release.Kendrick Lamar Duckworth (born June 17, 1987) is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. If you don’t believe me, check the numbers. Give it a listen, read the lyrics, then listen again. I’ve said in a previous post that Kendrick’s best quality is his ability to make the music that is usually associated with the “underground” popular. This is an album that is so versatile that you can listen in the car with your friends in the car, you can listen alone and reflect on the messages, or you can just vibe out to it. It complicated, its heavy, its beautiful. Im almost positive that Kendrick is the only artist who can turn ” Hip Hip Hooray!” into “Pimp Pimp Hooray!” and reference “head” in many double entendres to both criticize and advise society. This background is supported by messages deeper than the surface that really make for a reflective tone.
A mix of jazz and drums that is so smooth to listen to. Untitled Unmastered has the same sound as his last album. So we absolutely know this is %100 authentic Kendrick Lamar….but is it good? Is it worth spending your money on a bunch of songs that were not even good enough for his last album? He wants the music to speak for itself, which is understandable in a music industry in which people are so controlled by labels that there music is no longer actually theirs. It is my belief that the lack of titles and promotion is intentional in order to make sure the content isn’t watered down. So, I assume he just highlighted his favorite tracks from some “TPOB unfinished” folder in his computer and released them. Now, about a year after the release of his last album, it seems as though Kendrick was itching to release these tracks without any mainstream promotion or singles. Whether it had been an artistic choice, or if the label interfered here, they did not make the cut. Kendrick released another album, 8 songs, completely untitled and unmastered.įirst of all, what does this mean? This means that Kendrick had a few songs that did not make the cut for To Pimp a Butterfly. However, after actually receiving four of those grammy’s (not including album of the year) Kendrick Lamar did something rare and almost unheard of. After receiving the most grammy nominations of any hip-hop artist ever (9), just three short of Michael Jackson’s record of 11, you would expect the young artist to fall back on a beach somewhere and enjoy his successes.
It was filled with innuendos and nuanced messages that serve as double entendres to create an in depth depiction of the history and struggles of black america. Kendrick Then returned with a strong second effort with “To pimp a butterfly.” This album made shouts of activism. He has made a name for himself by coming from the crime-filled city of Compton and bringing forth the stories of his struggles to be a “Good Kid” in such a “Mad City.” This first album was instantly renowned as a classic. By now I’m sure you’ve heard of the artist who has taken over hip-hop music as we know it, Kendrick Lamar.
